Electron-positron pairs

Rays of the highest energy can interact in a third way with matter, namely by pair production. In this process, which begins at about 106 ev and becomes dominant as the energy increases, the 7-ray disappears in the field of a nucleus or of an electron, and there is produced an electron-positron pair. Owing to the energy requirement, pair production is impossible with x-rays commonly used for analytical purposes. [Pg.290]

Outer-sphere electron transfer reactions involving the [Co(NH3)6]3+/2+ couple have been thoroughly studied. A corrected [Co(NH3)6]3+/2+ self-exchange electron transfer rate (8 x 10-6M-1s-1 for the triflate salt) has also been reported,588 which is considerably faster than an earlier report. A variety of [Co(NH3)g]3+/2+ electron transfer cross reactions with simple coordination compounds,589 organic radicals,590,591 metalloproteins,592 and positronium particles (electron/ positron pairs)593 as redox partners have been reported. [Pg.58]

Pair production, in which the photon is annihilated in a nuclear interaction giving rise to an electron-positron pair, which carries the energy of the photon less twice the rest energy of the electron. [Pg.6]

Positrons can be produced by either nuclear decay or the transformation of rhe energy of a gamma ray into an electron-positron pair. In nuclei that are proton-rich, a mode of decay that permits a reduction in the number of protons with a small expenditure of energy is positron emission. The reaction taking place during decay is... [Pg.1359]

In his intervention Blackett treated the discovery of the positron in cosmic rays by C. D. Anderson in 193246 and its confirmation by Blackett and Occhialini,47 who had introduced, for the first time, the technique of triggering a vertical cloud chamber by means of the coincidence between two Geiger counters, one placed above, the other below the chamber. Blackett also discussed a number of papers by Meitner and Philipp, Curie-Joliot, Blackett, Chadwick and Occhialini, and Anderson and Nedder-meyer,48 all appearing almost at the same time, on the production of positrons in various elements irradiated with the -/-rays of 2.62 MeV energy of The. These were the first observations of electron-positron pair production. He also pointed out that the observed production of positrons has a cross section larger than the nuclear dimensions, and therefore, most probably, does not originate from a nuclear process. [Pg.18]

Previous results considerably simplify the analysis of motion of the doublet in the preferred frame E, which is an inertial system by definition. Let the z axis be perpendicular to the plane of motion at the center of mass of the electron-positron pair and. Vector L lies along the z axis, and the magnitude is... [Pg.369]

Figure 3. The photon as a rotating doublet (a) composite photon model—extended electron-positron pair rotating in x-y plane (b) electrostatic field of doublet—electrostatic force on a test particle at rest.
In Section V, the photon was described as an electron-positron pair in rotation in E. In the 4D ether, antiparticles are dynamic sinks, so that an electron-positron pair has a zero net momentum flux, thus explaining the photon rest mass. The photon is then a composite charge-neutral and mass-neutral entity. [Pg.379]

The primordial fluid propagates with a constant speed c in E, originating the Coulombian forcefield of the individual particles that constitute the photon. An observer at rest in E sees a rotating field as the electron-positron pair rotates. Photon spin and de Broglie s energy relation correspond to the ground state of the composite particle. [Pg.379]

The ability of angular correlation and Doppler broadening techniques to provide information concerning the momentum of an annihilating electron-positron pair was briefly discussed in section 1.3. Also, it... [Pg.297]
