The University of Illinios (Yeom et al.) demonstrated the fabrication of a monolithic Si-based micro-scale MEA consisting of two Si electrodes, with catalyst deposited directly on them, supporting a Nafion - 12 membrane in-between [12]. The electrodes are identically gold-covered for current collecting, and are covered with electrodeposited Pt black. The electrodes and the Nafion membrane are sandwiched and hot-pressed to form the MEA. The complete fuel cells have been tested with various fuels H2, methanol and formic acid and reached 35 mW cm , 0.38 mW cm and 17 mW cm , respectively, at RT with forced Oj. More recently, performances with formic acid as fuel were increased up to 28 mW cm" with electrodeposited Pd-containing catalyst at the anode [13].

Shimidzu and co-workers prepared two-dimensional polymers from monomers 88 and 89 (Chart 5.28) and the electrical properties of the electrodeposited films were investigated in a sandwich cell [100, 101]. Successive electropolymerizations of the Zn and Pd complexes in a bilayer device provided rectifying junctions where current flows only when the ITO is positively biased. Rectification occurs at the interface... 

Murray and his group showed in 198 that bilayer polymeric films and films sandwiched between two electrodes may be used as diodes or triodes via redox conduction that is potential dependent (126,127). Since then, Wrighton s group has carried this concept into the microscopic realm. As discussed above, microelectronic technology was used to prepare arrays of ultramicroelectrodes. These were modified using electrochemical techniques such as electropolymerization or electrodeposition (120,128,129). 

A related electrochemical approach to nanoelectrode fabrication was previously demonstrated by Peimer s group. In this case a nanotrench electrode was instead used as a template for the electrodeposition of metal nanowire electrodes in a method referred to as lithographically patterned nanowire electrodeposition (LPNE).
