Electro-magnetic radiations

The word radiant energy is the energy transmitted from one body to another in the form of radiations. This energy has wave nature and because it is associated with electric and magnetic fields, it is also called electro-magnetic radiations. The visible light, ultraviolet, infrared, X-rays, radio-waves and microwaves are all different forms of electromagnetic radiations. [Pg.211]

Some polyatomic molecules like C02 CS2 or SnCl4 which do not possess a permanent dipole, but develop a fluctuating dipole due to certain modes of vibrations also respond to infrared region of electro magnetic radiation. [Pg.233]

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is revolutionary in the way that it is one of the few spectroscopic techniques that is not based on the direct or indirect measurement of electro-magnetic radiation. It is grounded on the ancient observation of Graham Bell, that the exposure of different solid and liquid substances to a rapidly interrupted beam of light results in the emission of acoustic energy at the same frequency as that at which the incident radiation was modulated. [Pg.496]

Radiation-curing adhesives Adhesives cured by electro-magnetic radiation, in particular by UV radiation or by visible light. [Pg.161]

If the inequality (3.65) is satisfied, the apparent irreversible process in the mechano-thermal system could be caused by the fact that some of the energy is released from the system, for example as electro-magnetic radiation, in a non-measurable way. It is also noted that, in the pure mechano-thermal problem, only equality has a sound physical implication the entropy increasing inequality (3.65) does not correspond to a universal law but suggests that there exist some non-measurable energy components. [Pg.94]

It is known that the dipolar moment d(t) of a molecule osdllating with time is a source d electro-magnetic radiation. If this oscillation is of a harmonic type, so that d(t) = d exp( — io t), the dipolar moment al orl and radiates monochromatic light with a frequency Oq. This means that the optical line is described by a Lorentzian with a vanishing half-width i.e. by a 5-function. By using the integral representation for 5-fimction, we can write for the optical line shape function the following expression ... [Pg.126]
