Monitoring is relatively easy in small wadeable streams, where two persons can sample several stations in one day. Electro-fishing in small rivers and streams provide a very robust and efficient sampling method because most fish species can be caught with high and stable efficiency. However, when the method is applied in larger and deeper (non-wadeable) rivers using a boat, the results become subject to much more variation and bias. [Pg.49]

Early studies with electrophysiological techniques (EOG, EEG, electro-encephalogram), by Hara and collaborators, have shown that copper and some other heavy metals suppress or completely block the olfactory response to amino acids that are detected as food odors (e.g. Brown et al. 1982). Sandhal et al. (2004) demonstrated with EOG and EEG that a 7 day exposure of juvenile coho salmon to copper-enriched water led to a reduction or total inhibition in the response to the amino acid L-serine or to the bile acid taurocholic acid. The authors found a significant loss of sensory function (at least 50% lower response than in control fish) at 10 or 20 pg Cu/L. [Pg.521]

Ultrasound echo ranging transducers can be used in either wetted (contact) or nonwetted (noncontact) configurations for continuous measurement of Hquid level (Fig. 18.19(a)). An interesting appHcation of wetted transducers is as depth finders and fish finders for ships and boats. Nonwetted transducers can also be used with bulk materials such as grains and powders. Radio-frequency and electro-optic Hquid level transducers are usuaUy noncontact, echo ranging devices, which are similar in principle and appHcation to the nonwetted ultrasound transducer. [Pg.1932]

On the same principle of electro-activated bending of ionizable polymer gels, an artificial fish was constructed. Its body was made from a PAA-PVA gel and the float part from an inert polymer. The fish s body had the following dimensions 30 mm length, 10 mm... [Pg.425]

The protamines are strongly basic proteins, usually electro-phoretically heterogeneous, of comparatively low molecular weight (about 6000), and composed to the extent of nearly 60% of arginine residues. They are typical proteins of the nuclei of the sperm cells of fish and certain other animals, but are usually not found in somatic cells. Protamines contain no tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine, or methionine. [Pg.261]
