Electrical energy consumed

Electronic demand limiting includes devices that monitor and measure the actual demand and provide control actions to limit the operation of attached devices when the measured demand reaches a specified value. These devices require two signals, the kilowatt hour (kWh) or demand pulse, which indicates the units of electrical energy consumed and a timing pulse, which indicates the end of one demand pulse and the start of the next one. 

Miniature batteries based on aqueous, non-aqueous and solid electrolytes are manufactured as power sources for microelectronics and other miniaturized equipment. In Fig. 1.2, the sizes and shapes of some representative button cells are shown. A typical application for such cells is in the electric watch, where the oscillator circuit draws a continuous current of 0.2-0.6 pA and depending on the type of frequency divider and display, the complete unit may require a total of up to 0.5-2.0 pA for operation. Hence the total amount of electrical energy consumed in driving the watch for a year is in the range 15-60 mWh. At present, batteries are manufactured which last for 5-10 years. We learn much about chemical reactions from the study of electrochemistry. The amount of electrical energy consumed or produced can be measured quite accurately. All electrochemical reactions involve the transfer of electrons and are therefore oxidation-reduction reactions. The sites of oxidation and reduction are separated physically so that oxidation occurs at one location, and reduction occurs at the other. Electrochemical processes require some method of introducing a stream of electrons into a reacting chemical system and some means of withdrawing electrons. In most applications the reacting system is contained in a cell, and an electric current enters or exits by electrodes. 

In Europe, nuclear reactors provide about 40 percent of the electrical energy consumed.
