Electric field, separations based

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is now a well-established analytical technique that is employed throughout the world for the detection of explosives, drngs, and chemical warfare agents. The predominant approach is based on the nse of a drift cell in which ions migrate through a counter flowing bnffer gas in the presence of a low electric field. Separation of ions takes place as a resnlt of interactions between these ions and the buffer gas, and depends on the mass, charge, and shape of the ion. Because the drift cell was employed in the first ion mobility (IM) approach used (and is still the most common), the use of the drift cell in this manner is often referred to as IMS. In discussions of the development of the field of IM, it would be prudent to differentiate this experimental technique in which the drift cell is used from other... [Pg.205]

Mixing fatty acids with fatty bases can dissolve films as the resulting complexes become water-soluble however, in some cases the mixed Langmuir film is stabilized [128]. The application of an electric field to a mixed lipid monolayer can drive phase separation [129]. [Pg.557]

Electrophoresis is used primarily to analyze mix tures of peptides and proteins rather than individual ammo acids but analogous principles apply Because they incorporate different numbers of ammo acids and because their side chains are different two pep tides will have slightly different acid-base properties and slightly different net charges at a particular pH Thus their mobilities m an electric field will be differ ent and electrophoresis can be used to separate them The medium used to separate peptides and proteins is typically a polyacrylamide gel leading to the term gel electrophoresis for this technique... [Pg.1121]

SEPARATION PROCESSES BASED PRIMARILY ON ACTION IN AN ELECTRIC FIELD... [Pg.2006]

This method is based on the principle that charged partides move towards electrodes in an electric field. A mixture of the required amino add and contaminant salts can be separated at a pH where the amino acid has a net zero charge (at the 1EP). [Pg.251]

The separation of charged compounds is based on the differences in migration velocity (v) when the electric field is applied. Migration velocity is derived by dividing the length of the capillary from injection to detection (1) by the measured migration time (t) ... [Pg.387]
