Hydrocarbon resins are used extensively as modifiers in adhesives, sealants, printing inks, paints and varnishes, plastics, road marking, flooring, and oil field appHcations. In most cases, they ate compounded with elastomers, plastics, waxes, or oils. Selection of a resin for a particular appHcation is dependent on composition, molecular weight, color, and oxidative and thermal stabiHty, as weU as cost. The term s plastic, polymer, resin, elastomer, and reinforced plastic (RP) are some-what synonymous. However, polymer and resin usually denote the basic material. Whereas plastic pertains to polymers or resins containing additives, fillers, and/or reinforcements. Recognize that practically all materials worldwide contain some type of additive or ingredient. An elastomer is a rubberlike material (natural or synthetic). Reinforced plastics (also called composites although to be more accurate called plastic composites) are plastics with reinforcing additives, such as fibers and whiskers, added principally to increase the product s mechanical properties. [Pg.338]

Although cracks may propagate rapidly in homogeneous polymers, they are dispersed by the addition of elastomer particles forming plastic composites. The rubbery particles also provide an opportunity for chain mobility below the Tg of the polymer and this aids in relieving stress. [Pg.65]

Cyclopentene is readily available as a byproduct in the ethylene production. Norbornene 2-ethylhexyl carboxylate is obtained by the Diels-Alder reaction of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate with cyclopenta-diene (5). Norbornene isobornyl carboxylate, norbornene phen-oxyethyl carboxylate, and other related monomers are synthesized according to the same route. Polymers obtained from these esters exhibit excellent properties in terms of controlling the crosslinking density, the associated product modulus, and the glass transition temperature (Tg), thus allowing tailoring the properties of elastomers, plastics and composites.
