Copolymer elastomers

Acrylonitrile is mainly used to produce acrylic fibers, resins, and elastomers. Copolymers of acrylonitrile with butadiene and styrene are the ABS resins and those with styrene are the styrene-acrylonitrile resins SAN that are important plastics. The 1998 U.S. production of acrylonitrile was approximately 3.1 billion pounds. Most of the production was used for ABS resins and acrylic and modacrylic fibers. Acrylonitrile is also a precursor for acrylic acid (by hydrolysis) and for adiponitrile (by an electrodimerization). 

In addition to the broad categories of TPs and TSs, TPs can be further classified in terms of their structure, as either crystalline, amorphous, or liquid crystalline. Other classes (terms) include elastomers, copolymers, compounds, commodity resins, engineering plastics, or neat plastics. Additives, fillers, and reinforcements are other classifications that relate directly to plastics properties and performance.

With metallocene catalysts, not only homopolymers such as polyethylene or polypropylene can be synthesized but also many kinds of copolymers and elastomers, copolymers of cyclic olefins, polyolefin covered metal powders and inorganic fillers, oligomeric optically active hydrocarbons [20-25]. In addition, metallocene complexes represent a new class of catalysts for the cyclopolymerization of 1,5- and 1,6-dienes [26]. The enantio-selective cyclopolymerization of 1,5-hexadiene yields an optically active polymer whose chirality derives from its main chain stereochemistry.

Several different elastomers, copolymers of butadiene, are produced commercially. The major ones are copolymers of butadiene with styrene and butadiene with acrylonitrile. Some terpolymers, where the third component is an unsaturated carboxylic acid, are also manufactured. Block copolymers of isoprene with styrene and butadiene with styrene are important commercial elastomers.

To this group of blends belong mixtures of PP with st)oene-elastomer copolymers, styrene-diene blocks styrene-butadiene-st)a ene (SBS), sty-rene-ethylene/butylene- t30 ene (SEBS), st)rrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpol)nners (ABS), acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA), or with EPR/EPDM grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile (AES or AXS). The first blends of this type date from the early 1960s. In these systems, PP is either the main component to be modified, or an additive to enhance performance of the styrenic matrix.
