Inorganic solution chemistry often involves proton transfers to and from solvated metal ions as well as to and from the acids and bases that complex metal ions. Eight generalizations are presented below that attempt to summarize the insights regarding proton transfer reactions that have emerged in the past quarter century. The masterful reviews by Eigen (1) and Bell (2) provide much more extensive analysis of most of these points. 

Buck V. Bell, 274 U.S. 200 (1927). This case gave rise to Justice Holmes s infamous quotation that three generations of imbeciles are enough. Id. at 207. Evidence later indicated that Carrie Buck, the woman whose sterilization was upheld, was notmentally handicapped. Her child, who died at the age of eight, was a member of her school s honor roll. 

Very few examples are known, apart from solid state structures, where the sulfide acts as a bridge to more than four metal atoms. Two Rh clusters [Rh17(S)2(CO)33]3 and [Rh,0S(CO)22]2 have been reported in the literature77,78 where the sulfide is found interstitially in the center of the metal cluster and has contacts to nine and eight Rh atoms, respectively. In the former example an almost linear S—Rh—S unit (with d(Rh—S) as short as 2.16 A) is encapsulated in an Rh16 cluster, with four Rh—S contacts at about 2.33 A and four more at about 2.8 A.77 Other related systems are, for example, the [M6S,7]4 ions (13 M = Nb, Ta) which have been recently prepared by Holm and co-workers.80 Here, among other types of sulfide coordination, a /vS has been found in the base of the bell-shaped ions. 

As noted in 5.4.1 and illustrated in fig. 5.5, Fe2+ ions located in the eight-coordinated distorted cube site in almandine garnets produce CF bands located near 4,400 cm-1,5,800 cm-1 and 7,600 cm-1. However, only the latter two bands have been investigated at high pressures due to experimental difficulties below 5,000 cm-1 (Shankland et al., 1974 Bell and Mao, 1969 Balchan and Drickamer,... 

The chlorination of the chloroformate, obtained by the method given on p. 102, was carried out like that of methyl formate, in lead-lined or enamelled vessels. The lids of these vessels were also enamelled and carried eight Osram lamps protected by glass bells. The chlorine was introduced through eight pipes.
