Alunite has been found by Newrman et cd. (1980) with Prussian blue (q.v.) in a watercolour pan produced by the Enghsh firm of Winsor Newton and used by Winslow Homer it was presumed to be an extender. Watchman et al. (in press) have made a tentative identification of alunite in rock art at Wardaman, Australia. McNulty (2000) has experimented with kaolinite-alunite-silica mixtures from the Aegean Island of Melos regarding their properties as pigments and believes that this mixture may be the Melian earth Melian white, q.v.) or Melinum of the Roman authors. [Pg.9]
