Efficiency derivation

Boric acid esters provide for thermal stabilization of low-pressure polyethylene to a variable degree (Table 7). The difference in efficiency derives from the nature of polyester. Boric acid esters of aliphatic diols and triols are less efficient than the aromatic ones. Among polyesters of aromatic diols and triols, polyesters of boric acid and pyrocatechol exhibit the highest efficiency. Boric acid polyesters provide inhibition of polyethylene thermal destruction following the radical-chain mechanism, are unsuitable for inhibition of polystyrene depolymerization following the molecular pattern and have little effect as inhibitors of polypropylene thermal destruction following the hydrogen-transfer mechanism. [Pg.88]

The first synthesis of the benzo[6]quinolizinium ion (Scheme 98, Table 9, example 1) was by hydrobromic acid-catalyzed cyclization of the quaternary salt formed between 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde and benzyl bromide. Aromatic cyclodehydration has continued to the present as almost the only method used for the preparation of the acridizinium ion, its derivatives and benzo analogs. Because of its instability, 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde has been replaced by more efficient derivatives. The first of these was the oxime (example 2) which not only gave a better overall yield, but also made possible the isolation of a crystalline intermediate (181 Z = NOH). The disadvantages are that it is not suitable for high temperature cyclizations involving polyphosphoric acid, and some products (182) (e.g. example 10, Table 10) may tend to form double salts with hydroxylamine hydrobromide. [Pg.561]

Plate Count—A measure of column efficiency derived by comparing peak width to retention time. A higher number indicates a more efficient separation. Theoretical plates are an arbitrary unit assigned to the efficiency value, in analogy to efficiency units in open column distillations. [Pg.217]

The scattering-absorption of incident beams by a long circular cylinder has also been studied by van de Hulst [50], He also considers other particle shapes. Wang and Tien [62], Tong and Tien [63], and Tong et al. [64] consider fibers used in insulations.
