Calculation of electronegativities from bond energies requires averaging over a number of compounds to cancel out experimental uncertainties and other minor effects. Methods that use ionization energies and other atomic properties can be calculated more directly. The electronegativities reported here and in Appendix B-4 are suitable for most uses, but the actual values for atoms in molecules may differ from this average, depending on their electronic environment. [Pg.65]

All the elements in a main group have in common a characteristic valence electron configuration. The electron configuration controls the valence of the element (the number of bonds that it can form) and affects its chemical and physical properties. Five atomic properties are principally responsible for the characteristic properties of each element atomic radius, ionization energy, electron affinity, electronegativity, and polarizability. All five properties are related to trends in the effective nuclear charge experienced by the valence electrons and their distance from the nucleus. [Pg.702]

Weisz assumption that, when equilibrium is attained, the energy of the adsorption traps is at the Fermi level, may not be valid in all cases.
