Herein, we will review the preparation and study of this class of functionalized metal dithiolenes, with particular emphasis on the relationships between functionality and solid-state structure, and the overall effect on material properties. Discussion will go beyond the application of this class of thiolene complexes as molecular materials, and equal attention will be given to the effectiveness of various structural motifs when designing these species as polymeric precursors. 

Electronic States of Impurities and Their Effect on Material Properties... 

With the use of the DV-Xa molecular orbital method, electronic structure calculations have been performed to investigate the impurity effect on material properties. Firstly, calculations were done for F atoms substituted for 0 (oxygen) atoms in copper oxide superconductors. It was found that the population of the atomic orbitals of F atoms is small in HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) and a small fraction of charge carriers enters the impurity sites. The F impurities are therefore expected to be effective for pinning magnetic flux lines in Cu oxide superconductors. 

MACROMOLECULE A polymer system with very large polymer chains, where end groups of chains or substitution of any group on the chain has no significant effect on material properties.

Nonuniform composition occurs not only in a linear plane front solidification process, but can occur in almost any nucleation-and-growth processes (solid/liquid or solid/solid). In such cases, compositional partitioning between the growing nuclei and the parent matrix phase leads to a characteristic cored microstructure, as shown in Figure 6.33. Coring can have undesirable effects on materials properties, and so it is often removed by heat treating the microstructure at a temperature just below the transformation temperature to allow solid-state diffusion to homogenize the composition. 

So far, little is known of these interface stractures and their effect on materials properties. A better understanding of their local properties is veiy important for the preparation of advanced materials of improved properties. This is the reason why intensive studies are being undertaken in the characterization of low-dimensional systems, such as thin films, heterogeneous dispersion systems, and fine-grained eeramics (nanoparticle materials). ...
