A variety of furnaces are used in the magnesia industry to calcine either magnesite or magnesium hydroxide filter cake. The most commonly used are the multiple-hearth furnace (MHF) and rotary and shaft kilns. MHFs are primarily used to produce reactive lightly calcined magnesia, while rotary and shaft kilns produce hard and dead-burned grades of magnesia. [Pg.97]

Heat transfer in kilns occurs in a variety of ways. By far the largest transfer of heat from the hot flame to the kiln burden occurs by radiation a much smaller quantity of heat is also transferred by radiative processes from the refractory lining. The hot refractory lining can also transfer heat to the burden by conduction. Heat transfer from the hot combustion gases can also occur by convective processes as well. [Pg.97]

Abstract. Grignard reactions are of utmost importance in organic synthesis (Lee, 2005), and finding the prime conditions under which to conduct these reactions is really crucial to their usefulness. This work looks at the effects of time, and temperature on yield in the reaction of isopropyl magnesium bromide with 4-methoxyben-zaldehyde to produce l-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropan-l-ol. The reaction was first run for 10 min at 25, 50, 75, and 80 °C. Next it was run at 80 °C for 10, 20, and 30 min (see Methods section for more details). Highest yields (85%) were obtained at 80 °C with 10-20 min reaction times. Utilizing conditions that optimize yields will improve the economic practicality of these reactions, and increase their usefulness as a synthetic tool. [Pg.268]

Solvent absorption measurement has been shown to be a sensitive and useful test method in the manufacture of epoxy powder coatings. A test method was defined and the effects of time and temperature of immersion described. It was shown that solvent absorption is a measure of raw material properties (EEW of the epoxy resin, and CTBN elastomer type and concentration), the homogeneity of the extrudate, as well as the state of cure. The information obtained from solvent absorption measurements has proven to be extremely important not only in quality control analysis but also in providing an insight into the structure function relationships in epoxy resin chemistry. [Pg.210]
