Short-Term Storage

Polythene bottles are not suitable for long-term storage of plutonium nitrate solutions as radiation-induced stress cracks appeared in the bases of several 10 1 bottles during 6 months storage. Short-term storage and improved venting are recommended. 

Short-Term Storage. Short-term storage operations include refrigeration. heal treatment, and preservatives. 

Short-term storage Short-term in situ storage includes membranes that are off line for longer than 48 hours but less than 2 weeks (see Chapter 13.1.1). 

Cyclic nucleotides lose activity in liquid medium upon longterm storage. Short-term storage at 4 °C is acceptable, but do not store these media for more than 1 month before nsing. 

Natural gas production and transmission systems are complemented by underground storage systems. These systems provide the capabdity to respond to short-term gas demands which exceed the immediate production levels or transmission capabdities. They also provide an opportunity to sustain some production by refilling the storage areas when seasonal temperature variations lead to periods of reduced gas demand. In the United States in 1990, there were 397 storage pools having a combined capacity of 2.2 x 10 (1). 

Protection capabilities of bags can be maximized by maintaining the moisture content of the paper at 6—8% by weight, relative to a shipping environment of 21°C at 60% in relative humidity. When the moisture content of shipping-sack paper drops below 6%, the sacks become excessively brittle however, if short-term storage under such conditions is unavoidable, an attempt should be made to place them in an environment with adequate relative humidity for 24—48 hours prior to their use.

Overhead bunkers, also called bins or hoppers, are normally used for the short-term storage of materials that must be readily available for the process. The units are arranged so that the material can be withdrawn at a steady rate from the base of the bunker on to a suitable conveyor. ... 

Electric utilities can anticipate peak demands and be prepared to meet them. On the other hand, there arc short-term fluctuations in the power levels that a utility cannot anticipate but must handle quickly. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) is a technology that has potential for meeting both anticipated peak demands and those requiring quick response. 

A similar product is available for domestic use. Plastic containers hold a eutectic solution, and these are frozen down by placing these elements in the domestic deep-freeze cabinet. Once frozen, they can be used in picnic baskets, etc., for the short-term storage of cold foods, wines, ice cream, etc. 

Methods of arranging the product in the store will depend on the number of varieties and the storage life (see Figure 14.2). With short-term storage it may be necessary to get to any pallet, so access gangways will be required with only one row of pallets on each side.
