Composites of banana, hemp, and agave with high-density polyethylene resin were separately prepared in different ratios 60 40, 55 45, 50 50, and 45 55 (wt/wt). These fibers were also treated with maleic anhydride, and the effect of maleic anhydride on surface resistivity and volume resistivity of wood polymer composites was studied. The surface resistivity decreased with an increase in fiber content in the composites, while volume resistivity increased. The maximum surface resistivity and volume resistivity were observed in the untreated banana fiber composite, while minimum surface resistivity and volume resistivity were found in the maleic anhydride-treated agave fiber composite. The decrement in volume resistivity and surface resistivity was due to the increase in cross-linking between the polymer and fiber by treatment with maleic anhydride. [Pg.146]

To facilitate the MB release by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCL, the effect of maleic anhydride was tested. It was found that a small amount of the anhydride drastically increased the initial release rate of MB (Table 2) and depleted the dye in a few hours. However, analyses of the pellet disc after 1 week showed that the same amount of PCL used was left. Apparently the anhydride, if any remained therein, did not enhance the hydrolysis of PCL, as intended. The content of maleic anhydride which gave the slowest initial MB release was about 5% (w/w). Since acid catalysis did not occur, the addition of maleic anhydride was not studied further. [Pg.78]

The effect of the maleic anhydride content in the copolymerization reaction mixture on the degree of carboxylation is illustrated by the data in Table I. Matejka et al. synthesized several types of photochromic polymers based on a copolymer of maleic anhydride and styrene with azobenzene moieties both in the side chains and cross-links of the polymer network (Matejka et al., 1981 Matejka and Dusek, 1981 Matejka et al., 1979). The photomechanical effect was enhanced by an increase in the content of photochromic groups, and the photoinduced contraction of the sample amounted to 1% for a polymer with 5.4mol% azobenzene moieties. [Pg.102]

Actually, ABS can be considered as an impact modifier for PC. PC/ABS blends have been compatibilized with both maleic anhydride (MA)-grafted poly(propylene) (PP) and a solid epoxy resin of the bisphenol A type. Both compatibilizers are effective for formulations of an ABS content up to 30%. The the impact strength of the compatibilized blends was close to that of PC. However, above 40% ABS content, the impact strength decreases significantly (19). [Pg.221]
