Effect of calcium chloride

In the present study, the effect of variation in CaCl2 concentration on the percentage of loading content and loading efficiency of BSA in case of grafted and mixed beads was studied with different concentrations (1-4%) as shown in Table 11.3. Chapters 7 to 12 deal with factors affecting conformational equilibria and complex formation. Angyal explains the effect of calcium chloride on the anomeric equilibria of certain sugars by formation of especially stable complexes. These involve an axial-equatorial-axial sequence of three hydroxyl groups on a six-membered ring or a cis-cis sequence on a five-membered ring. This simple hydration theory cannot explain all the known phenomena, as, for example, the opposite effects of calcium chloride and zinc chloride on the colours. Engel2 therefore assumed that the observed colours were due to certain double salts present in the solutions. In the case of pure cobalt chloride, hydrolysis was supposed to occur on heating the solution, the hydrochloric acid liberated uniting with unchanged cobalt chloride and as an explanation of the colour change this is almost certainly incorrect. Ostwald 3 suggested a simple ionic explanation, namely, that the red colour is that of the cobalt cation, and the blue that of the undissociated salt. This is certainly not a complete explanation, and seems to necessitate a very marked decrease in ionisation with rise of temperature, which experiment, so far, does not support.4...

The setting time of concrete containing an accelerator will be shorter than that of the equivalent plain concrete containing no accelerator. The effect of calcium chloride on setting time is generally greater than that of calcium formate. 

Setting of Biodentine is partly caused by condensation polymerization of the silicate phase to form a chain structure based on SiO tetrahedra joined at two comers (Q2 structures). This is similar to the setting of Portland cement [61], though it occurs faster due to the accelerating effect of calcium chloride. Setting is accompanied first by a contraction in volume, as the initial solidification occurs. This is followed by expansion as secondary hydration reactions take place to form the various calcium silicate hydrates [83].
