In contrast to the extensive studies of helix-coil transitions, measurements of /3-coil transitions have been rare, although CD has proved useful in these cases also. The limited solubility of many /3-sheet models has undoubtedly been a major factor inhibiting these studies, and the search continues for good models with which the effects of amino acid substitution on the stability of /3 structures can be characterized.

We suppose that the main effect of amino acid substitution on the first flash-induced electron transfer is due to altered electrostatic interactions. For example, for r=10 A and e=10, the electric potential will be 144 mV. Differences in pK values for similar RC transitions in Scheme 2, arising from electrostatic interactions, can be calculated from the equation (T=295K) ApK = A i/F/2.3RT = A i//60 - 240/(r e).
