Practical considerations enter into the experimental plan in various other ways. In many programs, variables are introduced at different operational levels. For example, in evaluating the effect of alloy composition, oven temperature, and varnish coat on tensile strength, it may be convenient to make a number of master alloys with each composition, spHt the alloys into separate parts to be subjected to different heat treatments, and then cut the treated samples into subsamples to which different coatings are appHed. Tensile strength measurements are then obtained on all coated subsamples. [Pg.521]

Notwithstanding possible explanations of the effects of these various alloying elements, perhaps the most important message arising from the effects reflected in equations (8.11). (8.12) and (8.13) is that the effects of alloying elements vary with the environment. It follows that a steel resistant to cracking in one environment may not be resistant in others, with the effect... [Pg.1182]

Recent interest in weathering steels has stimulated work on accelerated laboratory tests which can be used to investigate the effect of alloy composition on performance. It is well established that a wetting and drying cycle should be an integral part of any laboratory test in which the characteristic properties of weathering steels are revealed , and Bromley, Kilcullen and... [Pg.1027]

However, before we accept this conclusion as the definitive one, a word of caution is necessary. Due to the CO-CO interactions the heats of adsorption depend on the coverage 0. Shek et al (17) compared Pt and alloys at a constant dosage and this could mean that the coverage of Pt was (at the same dosage) lower on Pt than on alloys, and consequently - the heat of adsorption higher. Shek et al report the above mentioned data for the (111) faces of Pt and alloys. They studied also the (110) faces, but there the effect of alloying is masked by the reconstruction of the surface upon CO-adsorption (18). [Pg.271]
