Before applying the first layer of resin, the surface can be treated with a primer that has the task of promoting adherence. This first layer also creates a barrier against the penetration of humidity and ensures the durability of the reinforcement system in the case of galvanized steel or stainless steel the oxides formed on the surface must be removed wifli an appropriate surface treatment. [Pg.120]

This specification covers an oil-base, lead- and chromate-free painting system for new or weathered (white or red rusted) galvanized steel. It is also effective on nongalvanized steel cleaned with hand or power tools. This system is suitable for use on parts or structures exposed in Environmental Zone lA (interior, normally dry) and Zone IB (exterior, normally dry). The finish paint allows for a choice of durable, fade-resistant colors. [Pg.815]

Steel fiber fabrics are characterized by a metal coating made out of lead or a layer of galvanized zinc. Both coatings aim at assuring an excellent corrosion resistance, making it a material that is extremely durable over time. The choice of the type of coating depends on the expected exposition of the material during the service of the structure. [Pg.11]

Various etchants have been recommended for the remaining metals of engineering practice, but it is doubtful if sufficient work has been reported to differentiate between them or to assess their effect on the durability of the bonds formed with different adhesives. Strong, durable bonds are uncertain with copper because of the ease with which a weak, friable oxide is formed. Even when coated with an adhesive, oxygen can diffuse to the interface and eventually cause failure. Brass has an oxide film almost entirely of zinc oxide and, as with zinc galvanized iron, it can hydrate or form salts with the tackifiers added to some contact adhesives. Cadmium is met with as a plating if a strong, durable adhesive bond is essential, it should be replaced by chromium, the surface of which can be treated as stainless steel. [Pg.230]
