Duodenal lesions

The compound also afforded remarkable protection from duodenal lesions (123). [Pg.224]

The horizontal part of the duodenum is in most instances possible to reach with a standard gastro-scope. Aortic pulsation is easily recognised in its mid-portion. It should, however, be born in mind that routine gastroscopy does not include the duodenum beyond the papilla of Vater and indeed in some instances may only include the duodenal cap. This is particularly important as during the performance of enteroclysis this part of the gut is not opacified, in order to minimise reflux of barium into the stomach. As a consequence significant malignant duodenal lesions may be easily missed by both groups. [Pg.32]

Many different types of lesions have been observed (very often at autopsy) in animals suffering from severe pantothenic acid deficiency. These may involve the skin, the adrenals, the entire gastrointestinal tract, nerves, and spinal cord. Functionally, in chickens fertility may be reduced by pantothenic acid deficiency to practically zero64 without any outward signs being shown by the fowls. Recently, pantothenic acid deficiency has been found to produce duodenal ulcers in about 60 per cent of the rats tested.65 It is required for bone development66 and is implicated in antibody responses.67... [Pg.201]

In 1972 we found that injections of propionitrile (Figure 1) consistently produced solitary, often perforating duodenal ulcers in the rat (5.). These lesions occurred 3-5 mm from the pylorus of the stomach, mostly - as in humans - on the anterior wall of the duodenum. The ulcers developed 24-48 h after the initial administration of propionitrile and frequently penetrated into the liver or pancreas ( ). [Pg.177]

The lesion in the duodenum developed even more rapidly (e.g., perforation in 24 h after a single dose) and more predictably than with propionitrile. Acetanilide was the first aryl chemical noted to cause duodenal ulcer ( 18). Subsequently, 3,4-toluenediamine ( ) and 3,4-toluenedithiol (20) were also shown to induce duodenal ulcers and occasionally adrenal necrosis in rats. [Pg.177]

A 31 year old Japanese man with recurrent duodenal ulcer was treated with famotidine, omeprazole, and lansoprazole at different times over 3 years. Gastroscopy showed a small carcinoid tumor in the upper cardia after 35 months. The lesion became larger while the patient was taking lansoprazole. [Pg.2976]

A peptic ulcer is a sore or hole in the lining of the stomach or duodenum and is a term used to describe a lesion in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. More specific names are used to describe an ulcer located at a specific site. Duodenal ulcers (the first part of the small intestine) are more common than other types of peptic ulcers. Peptic ulcers are caused by hypersecretion of hydrochloric acid and pepsin that erode the Gl mucosal lining. [Pg.364]

Documented effects In experiment on animals, this plant species had hypotensive, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and styptic properties (Plant Resources of the USSR 1985). A methanol extract of the plant induced a dose-dependent relaxation of duodenal smooth muscle in rabbits (Atta and Mouneir 2004). Mice fed high doses of the plant died or had severe hepatic necrosis and gastritis after 4-7 days. Mice fed low doses of the plant had no clinical disease or large lesions, but developed mild multifocal hepatitis and gastritis (Schultheiss et al. 1995). [Pg.77]

Embolism of cyanoacrylate occurred in an 87-year-old man occurred 5 days after injection of a bleeding duodenal ulcer with a 5 3 mixture of enbucrilate and lipiodol [25 ]. A CT scan showed linear opacification of the common hepatic artery, its right branch, some splenic branches, and lesions in the head of the pancreas suggestive of infarction. [Pg.1014]

Duodenal ulcer is the major lesion in Western populations, whereas gastric ulcers are more frequent in Asian countries, particularly Japan. Japanese-Americans develop duodenal ulcers, showing that the frequency of gastric ulcers in Japan is due to environmental factors, not genetic constitution. [Pg.253]
