Dual functionality

Historically, the isomerization catalysts have included amorphous siUca-aluminas, zeoHtes, and metal-loaded oxides. AH of the catalysts contain acidity, which isomerizes the xylenes and if strong enough can also crack the EB and xylenes to benzene and toluene. Dual functional catalysts additionally contain a metal that is capable of converting EB to xylenes.

Another class of DNA-binding proteins are the polymerases. These have a nonspecific interaction with DNA because the same protein acts on all DNA sequences. DNA polymerase performs the dual function of DNA repHcation, in which nucleotides are added to a growing strand of DNA, and acts as a nuclease to remove mismatched nucleotides. The domain that performs the nuclease activity has an a/P-stmcture, a deep cleft that can accommodate double-stranded DNA, and a positively charged surface complementary to the phosphate groups of DNA. Microbiocides may be toxic to humans therefore, care must be taken when used. When selecting the microbiocide, the field engineer can obtain pertinent information on chemicals from the service company providing the chemicals. The catalysts generally used in catalytic reforming are dual functional to provide two types of catalytic sites, hydrogenation-dehydrogenation sites and acid sites. The former sites are provided by platinum, which is the best known hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalyst and the latter (acid sites) promote carbonium ion formation and are provided by an alumina carrier. The two types of sites are necessary for aromatization and isomerization reactions. 

Internal treatments for BW are chemical formulations having potentially beneficial single-function, dual-function, or multifunctional effects. Globally, many thousands of BW formulations are available, and for the most part, each may be loosely classified into one or another type of commonly recognized chemical program, as described below. 

Every water treatment service company has several dual-function or multifunction programs in their BW product range based on chelant, phosphate, or polymer. Table 6 shows a comparison of commercially produced C, 4 LAS samples in a current North American light-duty liquid (LDL) formulation containing more than 20% LAS together with alcohol ether sulfate (AES), amide, and hydrotrope. The highest viscosity is observed with the high 2-phenyl/low DATS sample, whereas the high 2-phenyl/high DATS sample had the lowest viscosity. The DATS provides the dual function of surfactant and hydrotrope.

The serum L-PGDS/p-trace concentration shows a circadian variation with a nocturnal increase, which is suppressed during total sleep deprivation but not affected by deprivation of REM sleep (Jordan et ah, 2004). Whether or not L-PGDS is a dual-function protein in vivo and is involved in the production of PGD2 as well as in the transport of PGD2 or some other compound(s) remains to be elucidated. 

In many cases there is an interaction between the carrier and the active component of the catalyst so that the character of the active surface will change. For example, the electronic character of the supported catalyst may be influenced by the transfer of electrons across the catalyst-carrier interface. In some cases the carrier itself has a catalytic activity for the primary reaction, an intermediate reaction, or a subsequent reaction, and a dual-function catalyst is thereby obtained. Materials of this type are widely employed in reforming processes. There are other cases where the interaction of the catalyst and support are much more subtle and difficult to label. For example, the crystal size and structure of supported metal catalysts as well as the manner in which the metal is dispersed can be influenced by the nature of the support material.
