Drugs effective treatment approach with

Hypnosis maybe effective for severe NVP.11 Psychotherapy is another non-invasive treatment approach that is safe during pregnancy or in situations in which adverse treatment effects and drug interactions are a concern. One small study suggested that patients with hyperemesis gravidarum may benefit from the combination of psychotherapy and antiemetics. [Pg.298]

The core problem with the antipsychiatry approach is its practical limitations. How exactly does it assist the distressed individual who is suffering from the delusion that they have an atomic bomb inside their body It will be shown later that psychotherapy without drug treatment is largely ineffective (as Jung and Fried both concluded), whereas psychological therapy combined with active drug treatment is the most effective therapeutic approach. [Pg.154]

Bupropion is another alternative pharmacological approach to tobacco abstinence. It is an antidepressant drug that blocks reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and also blocks nicotinic receptors in the low to intermediate micromolar range (Fryer and Lukas 1999). Thus, the effects of bupropion on nicotine addiction may be through dual effects on dopaminergic and nicotinic systems. Further, it has been an effective treatment in controlled studies, both alone and in combination with the nicotine patch. Bupropion alone or in combination with a nicotine patch was more effective than placebo or the nicotine patch alone. [Pg.117]

This book is mainly concerned with the treatment of opiate misuse, for the simple reason that that is the form of drug misuse for which there are the most effective clinical approaches. As we have discussed, the treatment scene for opiate misusers, in contrast to other groups, is fundamentally altered by the widespread availability of the substitution option, in the form of methadone or alternative opioids. Physical dependence is part of the rationale for that approach, and the occurrence of clear-cut withdrawal symptoms also indicates the use of drugs such as lofexidine or clonidine, followed where possible by naltrexone. For reasons of severity of dependence and treatment options, it is therefore understandable that services are inclined to have caseloads dominated by opiate users. [Pg.81]

In these situations, treatment procedures in TCM that are similar in approach to the hypnotic and sedative drugs should not be used, or used only with caution. Instead, procedures that disperse constrained Qi, clear heat, promote digestion, and remove dampness and phlegm should be applied. Herbs and a diet that tonify the blood should be used for a long period of time. All of these can assist western drugs to calm the mind in an effective way and to reduce their side effects. TCM treatment can thus shorten the course of treatment required with hypnotic and sedative drugs and reduce their dosage. [Pg.33]
