A number of plants can eat insects. These plants are called insectivorous plants. Examples include the Drosera, Dionaeva, Venus-flytrap, pitcher plants, sundew, and blad-derworts. Insectivorous plants are most often found in moist and nutrient-poor habitats. The insects, which the plants trap, provide mineral nutrients. The amazing speeds of electrical impulses are illustrated by the capture of insects by insect-eating plants and during the tropism. Action potentials in the plants not processing motor activity are similar in their characteristics to the action potentials of sensitive plants of the... [Pg.651]

The family Droseraceae consists of four genera and about 100 species of perennial herbs, of which Drosera burmannii Vahl, Drosera rotundifolia L, Drosera indica L., and Drosera peltata Sm. are used in Asia for the treatment of cough. Naphthoquinones and flavonoids, which occur in this family, have not been fully studied for pharmacology, and it appears that flavonoids inhibit human neutrophil elastase, hence the potential for the treatment of inflammation. [Pg.50]

Drosera rotundifolia L., or round leaf sundew, is a little perennial herb that can reach 35 cm in height. The plant is found in temperate bogs and swampy areas. The leaves are simple, fleshy, broadly ovate and arranged into rosettes. The leaves are covered with sticky, shiney, red tentacles. The flowers are pink (Fig. 23). [Pg.50]

The flavonoids quercetin, hyperoside and isoquercetin, present in the ethanolic extract of Drosera madagascariensis, are inducers of spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory effects in guinea-pig ileum by affecting cholinergic M3 and histamine HI receptors [183]. [Pg.298]

This is a cosmopolitan family of insectivorous plants known as sundews (Drosera). [Pg.76]

Drosera is stated to possess antispasmodic, demulcent, and expectorant characteristics. It is used for treating bronchitis, asthma, pertussis, tracheitis, gastric ulceration, and specifically for asthma and chronic bronchitis with peptic ulceration or gastritis. [Pg.92]
