Limiting drilling speed

Rotary Speed. Diamond bits can usually be rotated at up to 150 rpm without any problem when hole conditions and drill string design permit. Rotary speeds of 200 and 300 rpm can be used with stabilized drill strings in selected areas. Diamond bits have also operated very successfully with downhole motors at 600 to 900 rpm. The actual rotary speed limits are usually imposed by safety. [Pg.793]

The downhole turbine motors that are hydraulically operated have some fundamental limitations. One of these is high rotary speed of the motor and drill bit. The high rotary speeds limit the use of downhole turbine motors when drilling with roller rock bits. The high speed of these direct drive motors shortens the life of the roller rock bit. [Pg.863]

Optimum Pump Output. In harder formations where drilling rates are limited by maximum available bit weight and rotary speed, the optimum value of... [Pg.790]

Air (or Gas) Downhole Motors. Some positive displacement mud motors can be operated on unstable foam. In general, these mud motors must be low-torque, high-rotalional-speed motors. Such motors have found limited use in air and gas drilling operations where directional boreholes are required. Recently a downhole turbine motor has been developed specifically for air and gas drilling operations. This downhole pneumatic turbine motor is a high-torque, low-rotational-speed motor. [Pg.847]

For very high depths (more than a few millimetres), the limiting speed vUm vanishes and the model (6.2) is no longer valid. Drilling reaches a limiting depth which becomes a function of the machining voltage [21]. [Pg.118]

The very flexible nature of the thyristor controller allows the motor to have accurate control plus excellent overload protection. Most thyristor controllers are furnished with maximum current limits for motor armature current and for short-circuit current protection. During conditions of rapid acceleration or heavy load the armature current will rapidly become high and so the maximum current limiter will automatically hold the armature current until the duty is reduced. Thyristor controllers also make it possible to gain accurate control of the torque or load at zero speed. This is very desirable when handling anchors and the drill string. [Pg.394]

The production speed of blow-molded parts is generally limited by one of two factors extruder capacity or cooling time in the mold. Cooling of mold is accomplished by a water circuit into the mold. Flood cooling and cast-in tubes are most common in cast molds drilled holes and milled slots are the norm in machined blow molds. [Pg.191]
