Dreams disorders

The new kid on the dream disorder block is the REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), a very strange syndrome in which patients enact their dreams through movement. This is not sleep walking, although it is what sleep walking was erroneously thought to be. How does RBD come about ... 

The adverse reactions most often associated with the administration of the COMT inhibitors include disorientation, confusion, light-headedness, dizziness, dyskinesias, hyperkinesias, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, and fever. Other adverse reactions are orthostatic hypotension, sleep disorders, excessive dreaming, somnolence, and muscle cramps. A serious and possibly fatal adverse reaction that can occur with the administration of tolcapone is liver failure... 

One peculiar effect of GHB is that it seems to reduce the symptoms of narcolepsy, a relatively rare sleep disorder. People with narcolepsy are excessively sleepy all the time and often have a condition called cataplexy, in which the person can suddenly and unexpectedly lose all muscle tone and fall immediately into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (the stage of sleep during which dreaming occurs). 

Adverse reactions include the following anorexia, apprehension, body/joint pain, chest pains, confusion, confusional states/memory impairment, congestion, constipation, coordination disorders, cramps/pain, depression, diarrhea, dreaming/nightmares, dry mouth, dysesthesia, euphoria, Gl pain, GU complaints, headache, heartburn, insomnia, irritability, lack of concentration, nausea, nervousness, palpitations, paresthesia, relaxed feeling, restlessness, tachycardia, taste alterations, tinnitus, tiredness, tremor, vomiting, weakness.

The distinction between conscious and subconscious mentation may however be more a matter of degree than absolute divide. This is most obvious in the transition from waking to normal sleep and dreaming. The neurochemistry of dreaming may ultimately provide one of the most important clues as to the chemistry of consciousness.
