The foregoing discussion leads to the question of whether actual foams do, in fact, satisfy the conditions of zero resultant force on each side, border, and comer without developing local variations in pressure in the liquid interiors of the laminas. When a quantitative estimate of residual soil is not called for and the suitabiUty of a metal surface for further finishing needs to be assessed, the water-break test is used. The term water-break refers to the behavior of a water film on a smooth greasy surface. When the film becomes sufficiently thin by drainage, it suddenly breaks into islands or droplets between which the surface appears dry. On the other hand, when a film drains from a clean water-wettable, nongreasy surface, it becomes progressively thinner and finally disappears by evaporation without ever breaking into droplets. Landfills in wet areas. Because of the problems associated with contamination of local groundwaters, the development of odors, and structural stabihty, landfills must be avoided in wetlands. If wet areas such as ponds, pits, or quarries must be used as landfill sites, special provisions must be made to contain or ehminate the movement of leachate and gases from completed cells. Usually this is accomplished by first draining the site and then lining the bottom with a clay liner or other appropriate sealants. If a clay uner is used, it is important to continue operation of the drainage facility until the site is filled to avoid the creation of uplift pressures that could cause the liner to rupture from heaving. [Pg.2254]

Serious stress-corrosion-cracldng failures have occurred when chloride-containing hydrotest water was not promptly removed from stainless-steel systems. Use of potable-quality water and complete draining after test comprise the most reliable solution to this problem.
