In 1952, Knapp and Goodrich published one of the earliest studies of the baccalaureate origins of U.S. Ph.D. scientists. Institutional productivity was measured with an index based on the rate per thousand at which graduates of the institution between 1924 and 1934 continued to the doctoral level.
