Water docking

Since docks are usually situated in brackish water, the anodes must have large surface areas to keep the grounding resistance and the driving voltage low. Cathodic protection of the interior is not necessary because the dock is only flooded for a short time and can be otherwise maintained. [Pg.413]

This sensitivity to water has practical implications. A cement liquid is stable in an atmosphere of 70 % relative humidity. It will gain water in more humid atmospheres and lose it to drier ones, and this will adversely affect cement properties (Paffenbarger, Schoonover Souder, 1938 Worner Docking, 1958 Wilson et al., 1970a). [Pg.242]

A dock had to be built where the water temperature is rarely above 40°F (5°C) the tides are 30 ft (9m) high there is a tidal current of 6 or 7 knots (1 1-13 km/h) and the water is so turbid that the divers must be guided mainly by touch. The docks also had to be protected by ice-breakers. These are built into the harbor to prevent large icebergs from hitting the dock before they are reduced into smaller pieces. [Pg.26]

The divers who were involved in the construction of these docks and breakers got 540 per day. Since they could only work during slack water, a diver might only be submerged for an hour or two a day, and when he was down there must be another diver above water. The salaries of the other workers were also high but did not compare with the divers . It was expected that labor charges alone would be 20% greater than if the same work were performed in the contiguous 48 states. [Pg.26]

The exponential factors usually given for total plants should be used for grass-root plants, and not for new units constructed at a developed site or expansions to existing plants. Grass-roots plants are those built in a location that has not been previously developed. They cost more than plants built in an area where the company has other plants. When other plants are nearby, access roads, railroad sidings, sewers, and water lines may only need to be extended a short distance. Dock and steam generation facilities may be available, and office, lunchroom, medical, and change-room space may already be adequate. [Pg.246]

A boat is tied to a dock by a line from the stern of the boat to the dock. A pump inside the boat takes water in through the bow and discharges it out the stem at the rate of 3 ft3/s through a pipe running through the hull. The pipe inside area is 0.25 ft2 at the bow and 0.15 ft2 at the stern. Calculate the tension on the line, assuming inlet and outlet pressures are equal. [Pg.142]

Rubbing the site of the sting with a crushed dock leaf is a simple yet rapid way of decreasing the extent of the pain. In common with many other weeds, the sap of a dock leaf contains a mixture of natural amines (e.g. urea (III) above), as well as natural antihistamines to help decrease any inflammation. The amines are solvated and, because the sap is water based, are alkaline. Being alkaline, these amines react with methanoic acid to yield a neutral salt, according to... [Pg.262]
