Dock plate

To reduce the possibility of structural failure, dock plates and gangplanks must carry anticipated loads. They should have labels to show load capacity. There should be regularly scheduled inspections to find defects or failures. Repair defects or damage or replace the dock plate or gangplank. [Pg.134]

Dock plates wUl slide if they are not locked into position. Some of the devices for locking them into position include stop pins, cleats or built-in flanges and blocks. Anchoring methods should not create tripping hazards. [Pg.134]

In addition, red and white paint can be used to highlight fire protection equipment. [Pg.92]

Portable dock plates can be used to bridge the gap between the dock and trailer, but there are some inherent dangers. The capacity must be adequate to handle the weight of the lift truck and load. The overall condition of the plate must be assured through regular inspections. The plates may be difficult to install. Back injuries are possible as well as pinch points to the hands and feet of those manually handling the plates. [Pg.121]

Overlap of the portable dock plate must be at least 8 inches. This distance should be checked continuously to ensure that no slippage has occurred. Trailer creep could easily result in overlap shrinkage. Curbed edges on the plate help to ensure that the lift truck will not drive off of the plate. Legs that are attached to the bottom of the plate help to keep the plate from scooting backwards, when a lift truck accelerates on its surface. The grade of the ramp is also important if too short, an extension ramp may be needed. [Pg.121]

Where possible, have a powered industrial truck lift the portable dock plate to prevent workers from being injured. Stay clear of the movement of the lift truck and plate. When not in use, store plates flat on the floor. If placed against a wall, the angle of the ranq) must be proper to prevent a struck-by tipover incident. [Pg.121]
