The Streeter-Phelps model allows the estimation of the DO sag in the stream as a function of distance. As stated above, high performance coatings based on epoxies, vinyls or chlorinated rubbers are used almost exclusively on all large ships. A general development in these materials has been the introduction of highly thixotropic types that can be airless sprayed at wet film thicknesses of 300 im or more, that do not run or sag on vertical surfaces. This enables the requisite film thickness to be applied in fewer coats, saving time and reducing application costs.

The best way to find thin, bulging tubes when the heater is off line is to run a ring down the length of a tube. A really severe bulge may be visually observed, even when the heater is in service. Sagging tubes do not represent thin tubes. I have seen radiant-section, horizontal tubes sag by more than one tube diameter and operate for years without failing. 

Very often the boards are still held by the tapes on which the book was sewn, but the folds of the endpapers are broken with resultant looseness in the joints and a tendency for the book to sag between the boards. In this case, all one needs to do is mend the inner joints as described above.
