Neglected diseases

Florence AT. Neglected diseases, neglected devices, neglected patients Int J Hiarm 2008 350 1-2. [Pg.510]

Locally advanced cancer breast cancer generally refers to breast carcinomas with significant primary tumor and nodal disease but in which distant metastases cannot be documented. A wide variety of clinical scenarios can be seen within this group of patients, including neglected tumors that have spread locally and inflammatory breast cancers that are a unique clinical entity. Many locally advanced breast cancers are diagnosed in patients who have had symptoms for months to years and have neglected to seek medical attention. Patients with inflammatory breast cancer often are treated inappropriately for cellulitis with antibiotics for several weeks to months. [Pg.1315]

Purpose The Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) program was established in 2009 to encourage and accelerate the pre-clinical development of therapeutics directed at rare and neglected diseases. These are diseases that are classified as effecting fewer than 20,000 people in the United States at a given time, and are also known as orphan... [Pg.375]

Besides drugs, other conditions that can lead to mouth dryness are radiation against the neck, fever, concomitant diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and other connective tissue diseases (scleroderma, sicca syndrome), Parkinson s disease, numeral psychiatric conditions and stroke with paralysis, dysphagia, neglect or oral apraxia. Damage to the mouth can arise due to drug treatment through different mechanisms and here are some examples. [Pg.52]

Nicolas Lemery (1645—1715), a French chemist, studied and analyTed antimony and its compounds in detail. He published his findings in 1707. Antimony was used primarily as a treatment for diseases, but as a chemical element it was neglected it until modern days, when it was used to produce low-melting-point alloys. [Pg.219]

These examples are given to show that a simplistic approach to therapy, which is based upon clinically useful but unproved hypotheses of disease causation, can lead to the neglect of studies into the relationship between blood drug levels and clinical response, as determined by morbidity and mortality, rather than by some easily measured but possibly irrelevant chemical parameter. [Pg.64]
