Discontinuous rings

Porphyrin and nonporphyrin metals associated with asphaltenes have not been easy to identify in terms of molecular structure. This is partly due to the fact that the characteristics (i.e., spectra) of all possible model nonporphyrin compounds have not been studied. Nonporphyrin metals are probably small polar molecules that precipitate as asphaltenes (Filby, 1975) or complex at defect sites in large aromatic sheet structures of the type shown in Fig. 10. Porphyrins with increased aromaticity and systems with low aromaticity due to discontinued ring conjugation are both characterized as nonporphyrin species. These compounds do not have the characteristic visible absorption spectra and hence are not readily identified. It is also possible that some of the porphyrin in the residuum may not be extracted and identified due to intermolecular association with the asphaltene-generating molecules. 

SmA phases, and SmA and SmC phases, meet tlie line of discontinuous transitions between tire N and SmC phase. The latter transition is first order due to fluctuations of SmC order, which are continuously degenerate, being concentrated on two rings in reciprocal space ratlier tlian two points in tire case of tire N-SmA transition [18,19 and 20], Because tire NAC point corresponds to the meeting of lines of continuous and discontinuous transitions it is an example of a Lifshitz point (a precise definition of tliis critical point is provided in [18,19 and 20]). The NAC point and associated transitions between tire tliree phases are described by tire Chen-Lubensky model [97], which is able to account for tire topology of tire experimental phase diagram. In tire vicinity of tire NAC point, universal behaviour is predicted and observed experimentally [20]. 

It has been pointed out that a different array of atomic orbitals might be conceived of in large conjugated rings. The array, called a Mobius twist, results in there being one point in the ring at which the atomic orbitals would show a phase discontinuity. ...

The traditional operation mode of synchrotron light sources is a discontinuous one particles are injected in the storage ring, the beam current is decaying exponentially, and after several hours the synchrotron radiation run is stopped for a new injection. 

If the synchrotron is operated in discontinuous mode, the storage ring will be refilled two or three times every day. The interval between two consecutive refills is called a synchrotron radiation run. The fact that two regions have to be used to calculate the value of %Cr, viz. one in which Rn < 1 and one in which Rn 1, gives rise to another reason why %Cjf is no exact measure for the percentage of carbon atoms present in ring structure. This is also illustrated by the fact that in Fig. 8 the lines for equal %Cr show a discontinuity at Rn = 1.
