Discontinuity of displacement

Johnson et al. (3) have shown how the elastic energy can be computed in the case of a spherical punch by adding a rigid body displacement to the classical elastic solution. In fact, this method is quite general for punches of any shape and can be proved by the general theory of elasticity (4) stresses and discontinuities of displacement are those of fracture mechanics ... [Pg.69]

In order to model a crack as an AE source, virtual two surfaces F and F are considered as shown in Fig. 7.7. Before a crack is nucleated, these two surfaces make a common motion together. Due to cracking, the discontinuity of displacement u(y,t) is nucleated between the two surfaces and denoted by using superscripts + and - on surfaces and F, respectively. [Pg.160]

The first case considered is solute desorption during unconfined compression. We consider a two dimensional plane strain problem, see Fig. 1. A sinusoidal strain between 0 and 15 % is applied at 0.001 Hz, 0.01 Hz, 0.1 Hz and 1 Hz. To account for microscopic solute spreading due to fluid flow a dispersion parameter is introduced. Against the background of the release of newly synthesized matrix molecules the diffusion parameter is set to the value for chondroitin sulfate in dilute solution Dcs = 4 x 10 7 cm2 s-1 [4] The dispersion parameter Dd is varied in the range from 0 mm to 1 x 10 1 mm. The fluid volume fraction is set to v = 0.9, the bulk modulus k = 8.1 kPa, the shear modulus G = 8.9 kPa and the permeability K = lx 10-13m4 N-1 s-1 [14], The initial concentration is normalized to 1 and the evolution of the concentration is followed for a total time period of 4000 s. for the displacement and linear discontinuous. For displacement and fluid velocity a 9 noded quadrilateral is used, the pressure is taken linear discontinuous. [Pg.208]

Interest in pyrolysis was rekindled by the oil embargo of 1973, and emphasis was placed on developing pyrolysis processes that would achieve a maximum yield of liquid products capable of displacing petroleum as a source of distillate fuels. Several processes were developed to the pilot-plant stage in the 1970s, but development was discontinued when oil prices softened in the early 1980s, and none of these processes achieved commercial success. [Pg.885]

Ocular Effects. Drug-induced transient myopia has been reported with several sulfonamides. Acetazolamide, an imsubstituted heterocyclic sulfonamide, has also been associated with myopic shifts in refractive error. Shallowing of the anterior chamber is the only variable documented to change in eyes exhibiting this increase in myopia after sulfonamide therapy. Myopia probably results from ciliary body edema that produces a forward displacement of the lens-iris diaphragm. The myopia subsides on reduction or discontinuation of acetazolamide therapy (see Chapter 35). [Pg.162]

Tyramine present in certain food and beverages can displace NE from sympathetic nerve endings, causing CV stimulation, but only if its metabolism is inhibited by MAO inhibitors. Patients suffering from HTN commonly discontinue medications (without physician consultation) based on perceived undesirable side effects, such as sexual dysfunction. In the case of clonidine, rebound hypertension and tachycardia, especially with abrupt discontinuance, can be problematic. Discontinuance of thiazide is likely to result in fluid retention with weight gain and unlikely to cause tachycardia and marked increase in BP. Ethanol is an effective vasodilator and tends to decrease BP. Tachyphylaxis refers to the development of a decreased response to drug treatment over a time span of minutes to hours, not years. [Pg.429]

The displacements of each crack and unit cell can be also expressed as a function of uniform stress o,° ). Here, the share and normal components of displacement discontinuities at each point on the crack are denoted by Df, ) , and given by... [Pg.543]

The shear and normal components of displacement discontinuities on the side of a unit cell are denoted by V°, V", and given by... [Pg.543]

We currently do not have any measurement concerning shear stiffness of the discontinuities of Coaraze. Measurements of shear displacement will be undertaken and analyzed in order to characterize the shear in situ behaviour of discontinuities and to quantify its influence on hydraulic conductivity of fracture network. [Pg.744]

The nonlinearities discussed in Sections 10.1 and 10.1.1 are of a continuous (smooth) nature. That is, the nonlinear addition to spring force, or string tension, is a continuous function of displacement. A more extreme type of nonlinearity—discontinuous nonlinearity—tends to have a more profound effect on the system and spectrum. [Pg.112]

A target optical monitoring of the gas-dynamic heat supply to the reactive medium that is strictly synchronized with the blast process is of inestimable importance for the aforementioned cases. There, the spatial location and displacement of the explosive front (pressure shocks) or contact (non-impact discontinuity of the temperature and density) surfaces are of great interest [83]. [Pg.143]

FIG. 4 Qualitative phase diagram close to a first-order irreversible phase transition. The solid line shows the dependence of the coverage of A species ( a) on the partial pressure (Ta). Just at the critical point F2a one has a discontinuity in (dashed line) which indicates coexistence between a reactive state with no large A clusters and an A rich phase (hkely a large A cluster). The dotted fine shows a metastability loop where Fas and F s are the upper and lower spinodal points, respectively. Between F2A and Fas the reactive state is unstable and is displaced by the A rich phase. In contrast, between F s and F2A the reactive state displaces the A rich phase. [Pg.396]
