Diphosphine dioxides

In the structure of [U(OPh)4(dmpe)2], four phosphorus and four oxygen atoms occupy the A and B sites respectively of a Du dodecahedron.48 Although the attempted preparation of complexes of Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2(dppe) with ThCl4 and Th(N03)4 led to the diphosphine dioxide complexes, UCU(dppe) has been obtained as a precipitate from a THF solution of the chloride and dppe.

The very low yield in the key Wittig-Horner step, leading to the dienol ether 9, was not due to the lack of reactivity of the lithiated derivative of 7, since the parent oxide was not recovered from the reaction. The major reaction product was the diphosphine dioxide 10, which, it was subsequently established, could also be obtained in high yield (75%) if solutions of the anion were made at low temperatures, and then warmed to 20°C in the absence of any added e ectronhile, before quenching with water. 

Diphosphine dioxides of the type shown have been prepared in a similar manner (120,172). In the methylene series x = 1) sterically hindered Grignard reagents gave lower yields and a range of solubilities offered...

The reaction was extended to the synthesis of a Cj F-stereogenic diphosphine dioxide 105 (Scheme 6.45). 

Diyne 103 and tetrayne 104 reacted as expected, giving diphosphine dioxide 105 as a mixture of diastereomers (C2 Awe5o = 60 40 71% ee) in quantitative yield. A single recrystallisation furnished the C2 compound in 33% yield with 97% ee. 

An ethereal soln. of phenyl-p-chlorophenylphosphinous chloride added during 1 hr. to a chilled ethereal soln. of diethylaniline containing a little water, and stirred overnight exposed to the atmosphere l,2-diphenyl-l,2-di-(p-chloro-phenyl) diphosphine dioxide.
