Ai,Af-Disubstituted- -phenylenediamines, such as A/-phenyl-Af -(l,3-dimethylbutyl)-/)-phenylenediamine [793-24-8] (10), are used in greater quantities than other classes of antioxidants. These products protect unsaturated elastomers against oxidation as well as ozone degradation (see Antiozonants). [Pg.225]

The /V-alkyl-/V-aryl- -PDAs (where the aryl is phenyl and the alkyl may be cyclohexyl, 1,3-dimethylbutyl or 1-methylethyl) ate the most widely used /)-PDAs. These derivatives reduce the rate of crack growth and also the number of cracks. The alkyl-aryl- -PDAs are in general excellent antiozonants, particularly in dynamic environments. These derivatives are destroyed only slowly by oxygen and increase the scorchiness of the stock only slightly. These are intermediate in staining among the three classes of -PDAs. [Pg.237]

A-l,3-dimethylbutyl-A -phenyl quinone diimine (6QD1) has been introduced as a multifunctional additive for diene rubbers and provides an advantage in mixing characteristics (functions as peptizer and improves scorch safety) as well as improved performance (better antioxidant activity than paraphenylenediamine antidegradants) of the end products [36]. [Pg.1034]

Antiozonant additives are employed with unsaturated rubbers such as natural rubber, nitrile rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, etc., to minimise the atmospheric ozone degradation reaction. Common antiozonant types include the parapheny-lene diamines such as N-(l,3-dimethylbutyl)-AT-phenyl-p-phenylene diamine (6PPD) and N-isopropyl-N7 phenyl-p-phenylene diamine (IPPD). Both these antioxidants can be identified and quantified using GC- or LC-based techniques. [Pg.582]

Reductive alkylation is an efficient method to synthesize secondary amines from primary amines. The aim of this study is to optimize sulfur-promoted platinum catalysts for the reductive alkylation of p-aminodiphenylamine (ADPA) with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) to improve the productivity of N-(l,3-dimethylbutyl)-N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD). In this study, we focus on Pt loading, the amount of sulfur, and the pH as the variables. The reaction was conducted in the liquid phase under kinetically limited conditions in a continuously stirred tank reactor at a constant hydrogen pressure. Use of the two-factorial design minimized the number of experiments needed to arrive at the optimal solution. The activity and selectivity of the reaction was followed using the hydrogen-uptake and chromatographic analysis of products. The most optimal catalyst was identified to be l%Pt-0.1%S/C prepared at a pH of 6. [Pg.481]

At the end of polymerization the mixture was treated with an additional 100 ml of cyclohexane solvent to fluidify the medium, 1 ml of 1M acetylacetone in cyclohexane added to stop the reaction, and A-l,3-dimethylbutyl-A -phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (0.02 g) added as an antioxidant. Polyisoprene was then extracted by steam stripping for 30 minutes in the presence of calcium tamolate. Each extraction was then dried for approximately 18 hours in an oven at 50°C under 200 mmHg vacuum for 72 hours. Reaction scoping results are provided in Table 1. [Pg.551]

The migration principle was suggested as the reason of the enhancement of the antioxidant activity of polyester-polyether elastomer-bound hindered phenol by the addition of 0.25% of an easier migrating AO, 4,4 -bis(a,a-dimethylbenzyl)di-phenylamine (5) [181] this easier migrating amine is regenerated by the immobilized phenolic moiety, by means of the principle of homosynergism [5]. Similarly, a blend of polymeric redox hydroquinone-benzoquinone AO with equal amounts of iV-phenyl-iV -(l,3-dimethylbutyl)-l,4-phenylenediamine exerted a pronounced increase of antioxidant efficiency in SBR [124]. A synergistic combination based... [Pg.158]

Also, antioxidants were found to decrease the aging rate of natural rubber. Among the antioxidants more frequently used are N-phenyl-p-naphthylamine, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-1-hydroxybenzene (BHT), N-isopropyl-N -phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N -p-phenylenediamine, and poly-(2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline). [Pg.211]
