Dimethyl (2,2,2-trichloro-1 -hydroxyethyl)phosphonate 9 7 Freshly distilled chloral (74 g) is dropped into dimethyl phosphite (60 g) with stirring whilst the temperature is kept at 50-60° by cooling. When cold, the product is taken up in benzene (300 ml), washed with 4 % sodium hydrogen carbonate solution (50 ml), and dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent is then distilled off and the residue is recrystallized from water, yielding colorless needles, m.p. 81° (115.8 g, 90%).

Optically active phosphorus(iii) acid esters PhR P (OR ) have recently been prepared for the first time by the reaction of a chiral phosphorus chloride and an alcohol or thiol in the presence of an optically active amine, in this case (-)-NN-dimethyl-(l-phenylethyl)amine. A kinetic investigation shows that phosphorous acid and chloral react to give 2,2,2-trichloro-l-hydroxyethyl phosphonate at a much lower rate than the corresponding reaction with dimethyl hydrogen phosphite. Phosphorus trichloride and dialkyl phosphites (R0)2P(0)H have been shown to react at low temperature in the presence of pyridine, producing tris(dialkoxyphosphoryl)phosphines [(RO)2P(0)]3P. ... 

Little is known about the long term effects of the biocides. The assortment of these compounds is changing fairly rapidly, with research trying to catch up. For example, Atlantic salmon were treated for sea lice infection by DDVP (di-chlorvos, 2,2-dichloroethenyl dimethyl phosphate), trichlorfon (dimethyl (2,2,2-trichloro-l-hydroxyethyl)phosphonate), hydrogen peroxide, ivermectin, azamethiphos (S-[(6-chloro-2-oxooxazolo[4,5-h]pyridin3(2H)-yl)methyl] 0,0-dimethyl phosphorothioate), and cypermethrin (cyano(3-phenoxyphenyl)me-thyl 3-(2,2-dichloroethenyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate). The last three compounds in particular are highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates in laboratory tests, but their fate and effects in field situations has not been studied in detail.

In the absence of a solvent and excess of chloral, the reaction rate for this reaction may be expressed by a third-order equation-second order with respect to dimethyl H-phosphonate and first order with respect to the chloral [177]. In dioxane solution and excess dimethyl H-phosphonate, the dependence of the reaction rate on the chloral concentration is the same. In addition to the chloro-containing a-hydroxyalkyl phosphonate, which is the main product under the above conditions, a side product formed as a result of dehydrochlorination of the main product, followed by phosphonate-phosphate rearrangement, has been also isolated. The presence of a base such as triethylamine, alkali metal alkoxides and hydroxides, or sodium carbonate accelerates the dehydrochlorination process. An example of this side reaction is the transformation of dialkyl-2,2,2-trichloro-l-hydroxyethyl phosphonates into dialkyl-2,2-dichlQrovinyl phosphates in the presence of sodium hydroxide [181,182].
