In another test method (ASTM D-5515), a dilatometer is used to measure the swelling of bituminous coal. The test method is limited in applicability to coal that has a free swelling index < 1 (ASTM D-720). The principle of this test method is that the final volume of char obtained at the conclusion of a standard dilatation test is dependent on the mass of coal in the coal pencil and on the radius of the retort tube. This test method incorporates a procedure that determines the mass of air-dried coal in the coal pencil, provides a means to measure the average retort tube radii and employs a means to report coal expansion on an air-dried coal weight basis. The value of the dilatation properties of coals may be used to predict or explain the behavior of a coal or blends during carbonization or in other processes, such as gasification and combustion.

Among other methods (e.g., Ruhr test, ISO 8264 [54]), the Audibert-Amu dilatation test (ISO 349 [55]) is commonly used. A sample of coal is compressed in a vertical tube and slowly heated (3-5K/min) while a plunger rests on the surface. 

Laser ablation systems hold considerable promise if restenosis (reblocking of the arteries) rates are reduced. The rate as of 1995 is 30%, typically within six months. Mechanical or atherectomy devices to cut, shave, or pulverize plaque have been tested extensively in coronary arteries. Some of these have also been approved for peripheral use. The future of angioplasty, beyond the tremendous success of conventional balloon catheters, depends on approaches that can reduce restenosis rates. For example, if appHcation of a dmg to the lesion site turns out to be the solution to restenosis, balloon catheters would be used for both dilating the vessel and deUvering the dmg. An understanding of what happens to the arterial walls, at the cellular level, when these walls are subjected to the various types of angioplasty may need to come first. 

In the Audibert-Amu dilatometer test (91), a thin cylinder of compressed powdered coal contacting a steel piston is heated at a rate not over 5°C/min. The piston movement is used to calculate the percent dilation. 

Atropine causes dilation of the pupil of the eye. A drop or two of an aqueous solution, containing 1 part in 130,000 parts of water, introduced into the eye of a cat is sufficient to produce this effect. When warmed with sulphuric acid and a small crystal of potassium dichromate, atropine develops a bitter almond odour. Evaporated to dryness on a water-bath with concentrated nitric acid, it gives a residue which becomes violet on adding a drop of sodium hydroxide solution in alcohol (Vitali s test). With a solution of mercuric chloride atropine gives a yellow to red precipitate of mercuric oxide. 

The possible therapeutic applications of these alkaloids as proto-zooicidal agents, coronary dilators and ecbolics, and in nervous diseases, for example in the treatment of post-encephalitic conditions, have been discussed by a number of authors. There is good correlation between the concentration giving the maximum surface dilatational viscosity and that giving the best foam performance. The nonylphenol 10 EO is a low-foaming nonionic surfactant with a maximum foam height of 150 ml in this test, whereas AOS produced 670 ml of foam. Figure 12 clearly shows that there is an optimum surfactant concentration for a dynamic process such as foam generation. 

Three male squirrel monkeys previously trained to perform visual discrimination or visual acuity threshold tests were exposed continuously for 90 d to PGDN at a concentration of 262 mg/m3 (approximately 37 ppm) (Jones et al. 1972). The animals were removed from the exposure chambers for a 2-h period once a week for the respective behavior tests. A fourth trained monkey exposed to filtered room air under the same conditions served as the control. The only sign during exposure was mydriasis (excessive dilatation of the pupil of the eye), which increased from slight to moderate. There were no changes in avoidance behavior in the monkeys as determined by the visual tests. 

Minor exposures also occurred at Dugway Proving Grounds, where remnants of BZ munitions remained in the soil. Workers sometimes came to the dispensary with Big Eye - one dilated pupil - probably caused by a small BZ particle kicked up while walking on the test grid. Physostigmine eye drops were usually sufficient to correct the problem. 

Visceral variations and anomalies occur in minipigs. In males the most frequent flnding is malpositioned testes which are seen in 12% of the males. Dilatation of the ventricles of the brain is seen approximately in 5% of all fetuses (12).
