Digital imaging plate

Sections were observed and photographed in an Axiophot Zeiss light microscope, developed in black and white, scanned, and the final digital image plate was achieved by using the Adobe Photoshop 6.0 computer program (Figs. 1 and 2). 

Imaging plates are exposed similar to radiographic films. They are read out by a LASER-scanner to a digital image without any developing process. After optical erasing of the virtual picture the same IP can be used cyclic up to more than 1000 times. The life time is limited by the mechanical stability of the IP s. An IP consists of a flexible polymer carrier which is coated with the sensitive layer. This layer is covered with a thin transparent protective foil. 

The capillary rise on a Wilhelmy plate (Section II-6C) is a nice means to obtain contact angles by measurement of the height, h, of the meniscus on a partially immersed plate (see Fig. 11-14) [111, 112]. Neumann has automated this technique to replace manual measurement of h with digital image analysis to obtain an accuracy of 0.06° (and a repeatability to 95%, in practice, of 0.01°) [108]. The use of high purity selenium in digital imaging is considered a potential market. Selenium-based plates can be used to replace conventional silver-based x-ray film, and in 1994 the Xerox Corporation introduced a selenium-based product, Verdefilm, for use in graphic arts appHcations.
