It is also interesting to note that the limitations of most neutron systems lie not in the neutron source(s) but rather in the (gamma ray) detectors and subsequent data acquisition system. The obvious need is for development of detectors with higher rate capability and improved energy resolution. All modern digital data processing techniques have allowed significant improvement in the performance of conventional scintillation detectors with respect to rate and pileup rejection.

Nowadays it is common to ask also for a floppy disk or a magtape with the data in a standard format and, in addition, for the plotfile. Of course the cost should be included in the fee, since everybody knows that digital data processing is cheaper and not more expensive than manual work. The truth is that it can be very efficient once it runs, but to come to that stage can cost you a fortune and even more. 

Simulations are not restricted to solving differential equations by digitizing them. Any dynamical process can be simulated with simple cellular automata, which are algorithms used to simulate complex processes, a method that takes full advantage of the characteristics of the kind of digital data processing that has now become possible. Cellular automata do what continuum models cannot do they describe observed morphologies successfully, as shown in Chapter 7, so they can also be used to interpret observed microstructures. 

Modern instruments usually support data recording in ASCII format for use with spread sheet, statistics and graphics programmes. Particularly with synchronous excitation fluori-metry (see following sections) digital data processing becomes a necessity.

An extremely important development was the independent discoveries of the solid state integrated circuit concept in 1958 by J. Kilby of Texas Instruments Corp. and R. Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor Corp. This made it possible to produce extremely small and powerful digital data processing units that are the centerpiece of a computer (the processor). For this extremely important development, they shared the prestigious C. D. Draper prize awarded by the National Academy of Engineering. In 2001, Kilby was awarded the Nobel Prize, but this was not shared with Noyce since the Nobel Prize is not awarded posthiunously.
