Diffusion battery method

Knutson, E.O., A.C. George, L. Hinchliffe, and R. Sextro, Single Screen and Screen Diffusion Battery Method for Measuring Radon Progeny Size Distributions, 1-500 nm, presented to the 1985 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Aerosol Research,... [Pg.14]

An aerosol size distribution can, therefore, be described in terms of the count median diameter, d, and the geometric standard deviation, a These parameters were obtained from experimental data using a diffusion battery method (Busigin et al., 1980). A diffusion battery is an assembly of a number of cylindrical or rectangular channels. The relative penetration of aerosols through different sizes of diffusion batteries at specified flow rates allows the aerosol size distribution to be calculated. [Pg.224]

The diffusion battery method is good for particle sizes under O.S-pm radius. With a sensitive method for the determination of mass concentration, it should be possible to determine approximate particle sizes from 0.5 pm down to gas molecule size, 0.0003-pm radius. [Pg.144]

The problems relating to mass transfer may be elucidated out by two clear-cut yet different methods one using the concept of equilibrium stages, and the other built on diffusional rate processes. The selection of a method depends on the type of device in which the operation is performed. Distillation (and sometimes also liquid extraction) are carried out in equipment such as mixer settler trains, diffusion batteries, or plate towers which contain a series of discrete processing units, and problems in these spheres are usually solved by equilibrium-stage calculation. Gas absorption and other operations which are performed in packed towers and similar devices are usually dealt with utilizing the concept of a diffusional process. All mass transfer calculations, however, involve a knowledge of the equilibrium relationships between phases. [Pg.321]

The activity size distributions were determined from the calculated penetration values in the diffusion batteries using the method outlined for aerosol size measurement (equation (6) for RnWL and equations (8) and (9) for 222Pb concentration). [Pg.228]

If only particles larger than a certain size are of interest, this technique can be inverted by using diffusion to remove fine particles from the airstream and leaving the coarser particles to be collected on a filter. Again, techniques like this, of which the diffusion battery is the best known, also yield a standard filter and, thus, permit the use of standard analytical methods. [Pg.225]

There are two methods that can be used to make activity-weighted size distribution measurements screen diffusion batteries (Hopke et al., 1992 Cheng et al., 1994) and all-type cascade impactors. Although screen diffusion batteries have been widely used, the activity size distribution cannot be easily obtained with them due to technical and calculation complexities. Even when conventional equipment and the impactor method are used it is difficult to obtain a result that is not affected by the decay of the radioisotopes. [Pg.129]

The mechanisms and reasons of catalytic activity of polyaniline (PANI)-type conducting polymers toward oxygen reduction in acidic and saline solutions are investigated by electrochemical and quantum-chemical methods. The PANI/thermally expanded graphite compositions were developed for realization of fully functional air gas-diffusion electrodes. Principally new concept for creation of rechargeable metal-air batteries with such type of catalysts is proposed. The mockups of primary and rechargeable metal-air batteries with new type of polymer composite catalysts were developed and tested. [Pg.110]

Intercalation of cations into a framework of titanium dioxide is a process of wide interest. This is due to the electrochromic properties associated with the process (a clear blue coloration results from the intercalation) and to the system s charge storage capabilities (facilitated by the reversibility of the process) and thus the potential application in rocking-chair batteries. We have studied alkali-metal intercalation and ion diffusion in the Ti02 anatase and spinel crystals by theoretical methods ranging from condensed-phase ab initio to semiempirical computations [65, 66]. Structure relaxation, electron-density distribution, electron transfer, diffusion paths and activation energies of the ion intercalation process were modeled. [Pg.246]

The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) has been first proposed by Weppner and Huggins in 1977 [22], This method is of particular interest for the measurement of ion transport properties in solid intercalation electrodes, used in lithium-ion batteries, for instance [18]. The determination of the diffusion constants relies on Fick s law. The GITT method records the transient potential response of a system to a perturbation signal a current step (/s) is applied for a set time xs, and the change of the potential (E) versus time (0 is recorded (Figure 1.11) [18,22],... [Pg.18]
