Die head programmed

The ram pushes the accumulated material through the die head to form the parison as a shot. This type of machine is obsolete however, there are machines of this type out in the industry still in use. The extruder or plasticizer is stationary and can continuously feed heated plastic into the accumulator. The extruder may be programmed to stop when the die is filled to a predetermined volume and then start again after the parison is extruded. The extruder speed is adjusted to fill the accumulator at the proper rate so the parison is extruded almost immediately after the blow mold has opened and the product ejected. Programming is defined as controlling the wall thickness of the parison from the moment the parison is exiting the die head. Fig. 13.13 is a schematic of a programming die head. [Pg.273]

The orifice angle of the cone can signiflcantly influence the flow anomalies that are frequently found with high molecular polyethylene (PE). In such cases, changing the melt temperature has little effect. Computer programs are available to calculate the distribution of shear rate in the extrusion flow channel. It is important to ensure that the critical shear rate occurs near the die exit resp. is confined to as narrow a region as possible. With the accumulator head, the effects of flow anomahes can be influenced by the extrusion velocity. To achieve the shortest cycle times with continuous extrusion, the plastic usually exits from the orifice at close to critical shear rate. [Pg.143]
