Die drawing

A schematic diagram of the die drawing operation is shown in Fig. 22. There are essentially three deformation regimes  

The polymer retains contact with the die wall and is deformed essentially iso-thermally at the temperature of the containing die. 

The polymer is not contact with the die wall, and draws as in free tensile drawing, with a neck. The polymer is contained within the heated die, but it is likely that the drawing process is partly controlled by adiabatic heating of the polymer in the necked region. 

The polymer continues to deform in the region beyond the die, but as it is now cooling rapidly it soon reaches its flnal deformation ratio. 

As in the case of hydrostatic extrusion, the die drawing studies at Leeds University have required the small scale rig shown in Fig. 23 for initial studies and a large scale rig for the production of substantial size rods, tubes and sheets.

Defining a random variable on a sample space S amounts to coding tlie outcomes in real numbers. Consider, for example, the random experiment involving die selection of an item at randoni from a manufactured lot. Associate X = 0 widi die drawing of a non-defective item and X = 1 widi die drawing of a defective item. Tlien X is a randoni variable with range (0, 1) and dierefore discrete. 

Deformation by rolling or die drawing has a certain uniaxial character, but the forces on the material at the roll or die surface are inclined to the specimen axis. Macrostress is produced, superimposed on a complex system of microstresses the latter probably include a pseudo-macrostress. As a result, the x-ray method does not measure the true macrostress, but rather the sum of macrostress and some component of the microstress that causes an additional line shift. 

In summary, the x-ray method does not reveal the true macrostress in specimens that have been plastically deformed by tension, compression bending, rolling, or die drawing. It would be wrong to conclude, however, that the x-ray method is in error. Pseudo-macrostress is just as real as macrostress. X-rays indicate the sum of the two, dissection only the latter. 

A similar technique, die drawing, is a solid-state extrusion method that is assisted by a tensile force to help overcome the high constraints and polymer strain rates at the die exit. Several methods were devised to address the problem of low lineal speeds because of the aforementioned constraints. These methods include solid state rolling,roll drawing,and roll trusion. ...
