Dictionary Definition Language

The set of possible data names can be restricted by a diction-aiy. which specifies which names can be used within a file to conform to the specified dictionary. Dictionaries can also be used to specify which data items will be processed by some software. In this case entries not defined by an appropriate dictionaiy will simply be ignored. Dictionaries arc defined in so-callcd dictionary definition language (DDL). Several commonly used dictionaries arc shown in Tabic 2-9. To use a precise language properly, you must first define your terms once that s done, you can use the definition to avoid any further misunderstandings. There s no avoiding the possibility of mistakes with our dictionary definitions, but we can hope to make them as simple as possible and then get into the precise notation to deal with the complex relationships between the named things.

Many of the definitions have been adapted from Merriam-Webster s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edn (1993-1998). If a word has several explanations, such as common language and technical meanings, the technical reference is being presented which, in some cases, has been amended by the author to more closely describe its use in mechanical process technology and/or agglomeration.

Useful documentation about the database structure and architecture is provided through the various schemas, which represent explicit data declarations. These declarations represent data about data. The central repository in which these declarations are kept is called a data dictionary or data directory, and is often represented by the symbol DD. The data directory is a central repository for the definitions of the schemas and the mappings between schemas. Generally, a data dictionary can be queried in the same manner as can the database, thereby enhancing the abdity of the DBMS user to pose questions about the avadability and structure of data. It is often possible to query a data directory with a high-level, or fourth-generation, query language.

The Computer Glossary was considered one of the best one-volume computer dictionaries on the market and an essential resource for many computer users over the past decade.
