Dick was bom in Racine, Wisconsin in 1920. His parents later moved to Tempe, Arizona, which led to Dick s attending Arizona State University. He had originally planned to major in education and become a teacher, but he got hooked by an interesting chemistry course and set out to become a chemist instead. [Pg.287]

Dick received his B.S. at Arizona State in 1942 and then moved to the University of Nebraska to do doctoral research under Clifford S. Hamilton. [Pg.287]

It should be pointed out, however, that the details of the vibronic structure of the Lb band are significantly different in some of the spectra which have appeared in the literature and which have been mentioned above. For example, while Jones et al. [44] and Dick et al. [46] have reported only one relatively strong peak in the range 600-625 nm, Mikami et al. [45] observed two peaks. There are also differences in the relative intensities of the Lb transition and the transition to the gerade state around 450 nm. In [44,45], the spectra were obtained in the same solvent (cyclohexane) and for similar concentrations (0.05 M in one case, 0.1 M in the other), while in [46] the solvent used was ethanol. In all three cases the experiments utilized linearly polarized light and detected the 2P-induced fluorescence. The 0.7/0.3 ratio of dark energy to dark matter has fairly small error bars if you take all the observations seriously, so theorists began, in the new century (ApOl), to try to identify mechanisms that could lock in such a ratio (vs. zero or infinity) long enough for life to evolve and all. Some of the associated concepts are a Brans-Dicke (scalar-tensor) field, a false vacuum, a scalar field that locks onto negative pressure, and, of course, ideas connected with strings and branes. Up to this point, at least, most of the ideas first surfaced in Physical Review Letters, Physics Letters, and other reasonably respectable venues, in contrast to some of the more imaginative candidates for dark matter.
