62-73-7 Dichlorvos

Vinyl Phosphates. Dichlorvos [62-73-7] 0,0-dimethyl 0-(2,2-dichloroviayl) phosphate, (CH20)2P(0)0CH=CCl2 (bp 140°C at 27 kPa, d 1.314, vp 1.6 Pa at 20°C), is soluble ia water to about 10 g/L. The half-hfe ia water is 8 h. The rat oral LD qS are 80, 56 mg/kg. Dichlorvos is used ia aerosols and sugar baits to control flies and mosquitoes. Slow release formulations have been used ia plastic strips and pet collars to control animal ectoparasites. 

The organophosphoms ester dichlorvos is sufficiently volatile to be incorporated either in permeable plastic bottles or plastic strips which permit its controlled release for fumigation of cupboards and closets to control cockroaches, or as flea collars on pets. 

In the body, metrifonate converts to the active metaboUte dichlorvos, (2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate), which is responsible for the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the susceptible worm. This effect alone is unlikely to explain the antischistosomal properties of metrifonate (19). Clinically, metrifonate is effective only against infection caused by S. haematobium. Metrifonate is administered in three doses at 2-wk intervals (17). The dmg is well tolerated. Side effects such as mild vertigo, nausea, and cramps are dose-related. This product is not available in the United States. The only manufacturer of metrifonate is Bayer A.G. of Leverkusen, Germany. 

Under current regulations, chemicals allowed for use in various European countries (Table 3) are either fully Hcensed for aquacultural use (oxytetracycline, oxolinic acid) or can be prescribed by veterinarians if they are Hcensed for use on other food animals (14—16). In addition, previously unHcensed chemicals that are appHed to the water (topicals) may now be used under a grandfather clause if no one questions their safety. The question of whether a chemical is a medicine or a pesticide has also been addressed. Eor example, dichlorvos (Nuvan 500 EC) was initially designated as a pesticide in the United Kingdom, but was later categorized as a medicine. A similar product, trichlorfon (Masoten), was treated the same way in the United States.
