Diborane disposal

The methyl borate produced in the diborane-disposal reaction can be removed from the solid by distillation. 

Caution Carry out all procedures in a well-ventilated hood, and wear disposable vinyl or latex gloves and chemical-resistant safety goggles. Diborane is a flammable and highly irritating compound. 

Caution. Diborane(6) and other borane species in the vacuum line trap may be diluted with nitrogen and vented into a solution of pyridine in benzene for safe disposal. Alternatively, pyridine may be condensed in the vacuum-line trap.

Scrubbers or incinerators should be used for the disposal of vented diborane. 

The preferred method of disposal for diborane is incineration. The gas should be slowly fed to a bum basin that contains a burning solvent such as naphtha or kerosene in accordance with local state, provincial, and federal regulations. The source diborane must be at least 50 feet away from the incinerator. Incinerators with a hydrogen fuel are also available, and wet scrubbers may be used.
