This chapter wiU discuss the development and role of different types of simulators in teaching MAS. We wiU discuss traditional box trainers, the use of virtual reality (VR), and efforts to standardize MAS training across the world. We will discuss the role of engineers in this process and how simulation may be used to enhance performance of both novices and experts through analysis of motion and force. Finally, we discuss how skills developed during simulation may be transferred to the operating room.

Appraisal activity, if performed, is the step in the field life cycle between the discovery of a hydrocarbon accumulation and its development. The role of appraisal is to provide cost-effective information with which the subsequent decision can be made. Cost effective means that the value of the decision with the appraisal information is greater than the value of the decision without the information. If the appraisal activity does not add more value than its cost, then it is not worth doing. This can be represented by a simple flow diagram, in which the cost of appraisal is A, the profit (net present value) of the development with the appraisal information is (D2-A), and the profit of the development without the appraisal information is D1. 

Extraction, a unit operation, is a complex and rapidly developing subject area (1,2). The chemistry of extraction and extractants has been comprehensively described (3,4). The main advantage of solvent extraction as an industrial process Hes in its versatiHty because of the enormous potential choice of solvents and extractants. The industrial appHcation of solvent extraction, including equipment design and operation, is a subject in itself (5). The fundamentals and technology of metal extraction processes have been described (6,7), as has the role of solvent extraction in relation to the overall development and feasibiHty of processes (8). The control of extraction columns has also been discussed (9). 

A good compilation of the functions of fats in various food products is available (26). Some functions are quite subtle, eg, fats lend sheen, color, color development, and crystallinity. One of the principal roles is that of texture modification which includes viscosity, tenderness (shortening), control of ice crystals, elasticity, and flakiness, as in puff pastry. Fats also contribute to moisture retention, flavor in cultured dairy products, and heat transfer in deep fried foods. For the new technology of microwave cooking, fats assist in the distribution of the heating patterns of microwave cooking. 

The mode of action is by inhibiting 5-enolpymvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase. Roundup shuts down the production of the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophane (30). Whereas all these amino acids are essential to the survival of the plant, tryptophane is especially important because it is the progenitor for indole-3-acetic acid, or auxin, which plays an important role in growth and development, and controls cell extension and organogenesis.

Cytokines and Immunophilins. A large number of inflammatory mediators and related proteins including the cytokines, colony stimulating factors (CSFs), interferons (IFNs), tumor necrosis factors (TNFs), growth factors (see Growth regulators), neurotrophic factors, and immunophilins are found in the mammalian CNS and appear to play a significant role in CNS function both in development and in aspects of brain homeostasis (40—43).

The main role of the human thyroid gland is production of thyroid hormones (iodinated amino acids), essential for adequate growth, development, and energy metaboHsm (1 6). Thyroid underfunction is an occurrence that can be treated successfully with thyroid preparations. In addition, the thyroid secretes calcitonin (also known as thyrocalcitonin), a polypeptide that lowers excessively high calcium blood levels. Thyroid hyperfunction, another important clinical entity, can be corrected by treatment with a variety of substances known as antithyroid dmgs. 

Certain cereal grains, especiaUy wheat and rye, contain hemicelluloselike arabinoxylans [9040-27-1], commonly caUed pentosans. Wheat flour pentosans are divided into two types water-soluble and water-insoluble arabinoxylans, which respectively constitute - 1.1 1.6% and 0.4—0.7% of the total flour. These polysaccharides have functional roles in dough development and baking performance. The water-soluble wheat-flour arabinoxylans consist of a (1 — 4)-linked chain of P-D-xylopyranosyl units substituted at 0-2 and/or 0-3 with single-unit a-L-arabinofuranosyl units. Preparations from each source consist of a family of molecules of various molecular weights and xyl ara ratios. 

In order to fully appreciate the potential implications of endocrine disruption, it is important to consider the normal role of hormones in controlling the development and functioning of the reproductive systems of the different vertebrate classes.
