Detroit Auto Show

DaimlerChrysler s ESK2 was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in 1998. It was a lightweight, aerodynamic 70-miles-per-gallon hybrid car and provided a platform for alternative fueled vehicles including fuel cells. 

At the Detroit Auto Show, the Chrysler Corporation unveiled the mockup of a PEM-fuel-cell passenger car that would be fueled by hydrogen extracted from gasoline or other liquid hydrocarbon fuel by an onboard processor developed by Arthur D. Little, Inc. 

Ballard Power Systems unveiled the world s first production-ready PEM fuel cell for automotive use at the Detroit Auto Show. The 70-kilowatt unit was to be the basic design to be used by carmakers such as DaimlerChrysler and Ford in the first generation of fuel cell cars, promised for 2004. Also at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford showed a fuel cell version of its new small Focus model, and General Motors showed a fuel cell demonstrator version of a new hybrid five-passenger car, the Precept. 

At the 2000 Detroit Auto Show, GM showed a fuel cell version of its Precept concept car, introduced earlier as a hybrid. The car wasn t functional, but GM vice chairman Harry Pearce said it would be by the end of the year. With a 75-kilowatt-continuous, 105-kilowatt-peak PEM fuel cell and a secret lightweight hydride, the Precept was said to have a range of 500 miles and fuel economy equivalent to 108 miles per gallon of gasoline. Pearce called it simply a step on the long journey to a very different future that we see for the automobile. ... 

Also in early 2000, Korea s Hyundai announced a collaboration with International Fuel Cells to build two and maybe even four prototype fuel cell sport-utility vehicles, the first ones perhaps in time for the 2001 Detroit Auto Show.

In 2007 at the Detroit Auto Show, General Motors Corporation introduced a PHEV that utilizes a lithium ion battery [9], The Volt is a plug-in series hybrid that is expected to be produced in 2010 [10], The average distance the American commuter travels today is approximately 64 km, or 40 miles, according to US News and World Report [11], The Volt design is set to run purely on electrical power for the first 40 miles, which will cover the range of the average commute... 

BYD (Build Your Dreams) e6 (Figure 10.16) is not new, as it was already presented at the Coho Center in 2009 and 2010, but the renewed BYD e6-Eco presented at the Detroit Auto Show 2011 is getting closer to series production. This model proposes an electric alternative to Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. Technical features of the car include 60-kWh lithium iron phosphate batteries, rechargeable in 6 h and capable of powering a 75-kW electric motor. This car has a top speed of 140 km/h, and its range per charge is expected to be 300 km. 

BMW ActiveE was presented at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. It is a zero-emission 1-Series powered by an electric motor. Based on the same principles as Mini E, BMW ActiveE is a front-drive vehicle with an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. It uses two different lithium-ion battery packs, as shown in Eigure 10.17 the first in the traditional area of the fuel tank (rear module) and the second replacing the distribution system (tunnel module). 

Most current produetion automobiles use triple sealed doors, whieh comprise of a eontinuous body mounted primary seal, a continuous door mounted primary seal and a series of segmented auxiliary seals around each door. Observations at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show indicate that double sealed door apotures are only currently being nsed by U.S. manufactured trucks. The body and door mounted primary seals act as a double barrier to noise transmission and aspiration, while the auxiliary seals are for air and water management.

These same concepts could be used in fuel cell powered cars. Ultralight fuel cell vehicles are a part of the current generation of clean concept cars, sometimes called Green Cars. In 1996, when EV1 became available, it accelerated the development of the hybrid Toyota Prius and GM would show a number of alternative-fueled concept cars at the 1998 Detroit Show. Now every auto show has its alternative cars. 

In January 2002, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, General Motors unveiled the Autonomy fuel cell concept car. The basic component of GM s plan for a fuel cell vehicle is a so-called skateboard platform that would include both the fuel cells and the vehicle s electronic powertrain. The platform would allow a variety of body types to be built and assembled to the chassis.

The Chevrolet Volt concept car [2] was presented to the public at the North American International Auto Show 2007 in Detroit. Eventually, in 2010, the Chevrolet Volt (see Figure 8.5) was introduced to the US market. About 1 year later, the sale of Opel Ampera (also a Voltec-based vehicle [3]) started in Europe. In early 2013, the Cadillac ELR, a two-door coupe using a modified and performance-optimized Voltec powertrain, was unveiled as a 2014 production model to the general audience at the Detroit and Geneva motor shows.
