In theory, the MS system used in these techniques is no different from any other detection system (e.g. a UV detector or flame ionization detection), except that it is a good deal more expensive. However, its main advantage over other detectors is the additional information about the analyte that it provides and the greater sensitivity it offers.

Because of the lack of knowledge concerning the detailed processes taking place in a g.I.c. column, the present-day theories cannot hope to unravel the problems associated with peak asymmetry. Possible causes that have been given by various workers - - including eddy diffusion in packed columns, nonequilibria between phases, sample size, surface heterogeneity, and non-zero response time of the detecting system. 

This is an extremely detailed subject involving not only detection systems for radiation (or its surrogates electronic currents, radioactive isotopes, etc.) but also control theory, computer representations of data and their interpretation, and automatic systems that take over when events happen too fast for human intervention.
